Gonzaga Men's basketball is in the hunt for a NCAA Tournament No. 1 Seed as it aims for its first Final Four appearance, first National Championship game appearance and first National Championship. Gonzaga is competing for one of four No. 1 Seeds with these 6 other elite programs: Kentucky, Virginia, Duke, Wisconsin, Villanova, and Arizona.
The competition is fierce. These top 7 elite programs combined have an astounding 177/12 win/loss ratio.
These teams refuse to loose!
The Bracketologists currently pick different No. 1 seeds.
ESPN's Joe Lunardi: Kentucky, Virginia, Gonzaga, Duke
SB Nation's Chris Dobbertean: Kentucky, Virginia, Duke, Wisconsin
CBS Sports' Jerry Palm: Kentucky, Virginia, Duke, Gonzaga
Yahoo's Brad Evan: Kentucky, Virginia, Gonzaga, Duke
USA Today: Kentucky, Virginia, Duke, Villanova
Tournament seedings are based in part by won/loss record, strength of conference, strength of nonconference schedule and quality of wins and losses.
Here's how the teams stack up:
No. 1 Kentucky 27-0. Kentucky is undefeated and has a good chance of remaining undefeated during the regular season play. Even with a loss, Kentucky is likely to retain its No. 1 seed position. Kentucky won the National Championship in 2012 and made it to the Championship game in 2014. Kentucky is the clear favorite to win the National Championship this year.
No. 2 Virginia 25-1. Virginia's only loss is against Duke at home. The ACC is considered the strongest conference this season with five teams ranked in the Top 25.
No. 3 Gonzaga 28-1. Gonzaga's only loss was a thrilling OT loss at Arizona. The Zags have nonconference wins against UCLA, SMU, Georgia, St. Johns, Washington State and Memphis. The Bulldogs took a huge step in securing a No. 1 seed in its exciting come from 17 behind win at rival St. Mary's on Saturday. Of the 7 elite teams, Gonzaga is considered to be in the weakest conference, the WCC. Although the SEC does not have a strong basketball conference this season and the Pac12 is having a down year. Gonzaga leads the nation in shooting percentage 52.7%.
No. 4 Duke 24-3. Duke is the only team to beat Virginia this season. Duke lost at home against Miama, and at NC State and at ranked Notre Dame.
No. 5 Wisconsin 25-2. Wisconsin lost at home against Duke and lost on the road at Rutgers. The Big Ten has three teams ranked in the Top 25.
No. 6 Villanova 25-2. Villanova has an OT loss at Seton Hall and a loss at Georgetown. The Big East Conference has two teams ranked in the Top 25 polls.
No. 7 Arizona 24-3. If Arizona wins its remaining regular season games and Gonzaga has a regular season loss, Arizone could supplant Gonzaga as the No. 1 seed in the West Region. Arizona has losses at UNLV, Oregon State and ASU. The Pac-12 has two teams ranked in the Top 25.
