Relaxed Breathing Calms Your Nervous System

Control your state

If you can control your breath . . . you can control your state.

Most people overlook this.

Because breathing is automatic.

But how you breathe?

That changes everything.

When you’re stressed, your breathing becomes👇
→Short
→Shallow
→Fast

Which keeps your body in a sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state.

Box breathing

Box breathing is one of the simplest ways to reverse that.

Inhale → hold → exhale → hold (equal counts)

This pattern helps👇
✅ slow your heart rate
✅ stimulate the vagus nerve
✅shift you into a parasympathetic (rest-and-recover) state
✅ reduce cortisol and perceived stress

And when you practice this consistently . . . You’re not just calming down in the moment.

You’re training your baseline.

There’s also a deeper layer to this.

Your breathing rate is directly tied to👇
☑️Metabolic efficiency
☑️Heart rate variability (HRV)
☑️Overall longevity

Slower efficient breathing

In general👇
Slower, more efficient breathing → better nervous system regulation
Higher HRV → better recovery and resilience

There’s even an interesting pattern seen across species:
Animals that breathe rapidly (like mice) tend to have shorter lifespans.
Animals with slower respiratory rates (like tortoises) tend to live much longer.

Now, we’re not turning into tortoises anytime soon.
But the principle still applies:
Efficiency > intensity.

This is why I’m so big on breathwork.

Because it’s one of the fastest ways to👇
✅Calm your body
✅Improve focus
✅Regulate stress
✅And over time… improve how your system functions as a whole

And while box breathing is a great starting point . . .

There are deeper methods that can👇
✅Help release stored tension
✅Further regulate the nervous system
✅And create even stronger shifts in how you feel

Most people try to think their way into feeling better.

But your physiology responds faster than your thoughts.
