Taurine is found in popular drinks like Red Bull and Celcuis
A new study published in Nature (Taurine from tumour niche drives glycolysis to promote leukaemogenesis) found that “taurine uptake in leukaemia cells promotes disease progression“. Taurine, a popular additive to energy drinks considered a metabolism booster. can act as a fuel source for leukemia cancer cells, which develop in bone marrow.
Cancer cells that feed on taurine go through a process called glycolysis, a process where cells break down glucose to make energy. This process gives cancer cells the energy to divide and multiply making leukemia more aggressive, helping make more cancer cells form.
Leukemia is cancer of the body’s blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. It is the 10th most common cancer.
Leukemia mostly involves the white blood cells. Your white blood cells are potent infection fighters — they normally grow and divide in an orderly way, as your body needs them. But in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces an excessive amount of abnormal white blood cells, which don’t function properly.
Good hydration is essential, especially during hot, cold and windy weather conditions. It is best to reconsider drinking ‘energy drinks’ that don’t contain taurine, especially if you an endurance athlete that needs to consume a lot of liquids to remain hydrated.
Raw milk is an excellent source of hydration. See Raw Milk – Most Effective Sports Training and Recovery Drink!
